　ひょんなことからキング牧師の例の、“I have a dream”*1の原文を読んだ。中学生のときに英語のテキストで読んだのはクライマックスのごくごく一部にすぎなくて、けっこう長い演説だった。
　後半の、ニューハンプシャーの山々からミシシッピの丘までを巡る地名の羅列なんて、まるで祝詞か万葉の歌だなあ。八雲立つ出雲、春日なる三笠、とりが鳴く吾妻。神々よ聞こし召せ。

So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
